"Wealth is not about accumulation. It is about intention."

Céline Marchand on building a family office, the discipline of restraint, and the future of private capital.

Céline Marchand built one of Geneva's most respected family offices from a single conviction: that capital, managed with care, becomes a form of legacy. We met her at her home above the lake on a Tuesday morning in April.

Wealth is not about accumulation. It is about intention.

You started Marchand Capital in 2004, at a moment when the industry was moving in the opposite direction — toward scale, toward consolidation. What made you go the other way?

"I had spent ten years in a large institution and I understood, very clearly, what it could and could not do. It could manage money efficiently. It could not manage relationships. And for the families I wanted to work with, the relationship is everything. The money is almost secondary."

The office now manages assets for eleven families across three generations. Marchand does not advertise. She does not attend conferences. New clients come, as she puts it, "through people who already trust us."

"The families I work with are not looking for performance. They are looking for continuity. They want to know that in twenty years, the values they hold today will still be reflected in how their capital is deployed. That is a very different brief from maximising returns."

We ask about the next generation — the children and grandchildren of her original clients, now beginning to take an active interest in their inheritance. "They are different," she says, with something that might be admiration. "They ask harder questions. They want to understand not just what is held, but why. I find that encouraging."
